Character & Canon: Victor Van Dort – AU, Corpse Bride/Alice: Madness Returns
District: Astralfield
Personality:
Warning: Possible Triggering Content Mentioned
Before we get into personality, allow me to briefly explain his AU – this is a Victor who went through the entirety of Corpse Bride (young Victorian man is arranged to marry a sweet living young lady, but ends up accidentally marrying a lively corpse bride while practicing his vows and finds himself torn between the two while the murderer of the corpse bride starts making moves on the living one), but lost Victoria after the movie when her parents grabbed her and fled town, terrified by the walking dead. By the time he and his parents found the family again, she’d been married off to another man (fortunately, this time a nice one she’d grown to love herself after a misunderstanding led her to believe Victor was dead). Victor’s own parents didn’t believe him about the dead rising – not helped by Pastor Galswells going off and calling him a damned soul – and ended up sending him away to be treated in London by one Dr. Angus Bumby. There, Victor met Alice Liddell, and the pair became friends in the months before the start of “Alice: Madness Returns.” While Alice worked to restore her Wonderland, Victor tried to keep an eye on her (very unsuccessfully, sadly), and discovered Bumby’s dark secret – that the doctor was involved in child prostitution. Unfortunately, Bumby caught him in the middle of said discovery and wiped his mind, turning him into his “personal assistant” Thirteen. Victor remained that way for a week until Alice confronted Bumby in Moorgate Station and killed him by shoving him in front of a train. She managed to snap Victor partially out of his broken state – restoring his personality somewhat, but leaving him almost totally amnesiac. Victor then proceeded to spend at least a couple weeks in November without his memories, until finally he found a way past the mental wall in his mind and restored them. He enters Mallow Hallow not long after this, back to himself but rather changed from his experience.
Now, as for his actual personality. . . Victor’s on the shy and introverted side – he hates crowds and sometimes needs to be pushed to socialize. He’s prone to stuttering and fidgeting when nervous – in particular, he tends to fuss with his hands or his tie. He also doesn’t always think before he talks – in fact, he can come out with some pretty hurtful comments when he’s under stress. He’s not always the best at handling conflict – with awkward or frightening situations triggering an intense need to flee within him – and sometimes can miss an obvious solution even when it’s staring him right in the face. He’s rather prone to depression and cynicism, and after the Houndsditch clusterfuck, he’s not all that convinced that humanity has that many good points. He’s even picked up a slight sarcastic streak from his beloved Alice.
However, on the other hand, he’s quite adaptable and open-minded. He’s quite willing to interact with people most others would consider insane or monsters, and, once he finds a good niche for himself, it doesn’t take him that long to adapt to new surroundings. Raised to be a proper gentleman, he does his best to be polite and kind to everyone he meets (at least at first), and he hates disappointing people. This does sometimes manifest in a tendency to let others push him around – however, after his time in the Land of the Dead and Whitechapel, he’s doing his best to stand up for himself more. Perhaps he’s still more susceptible than most to a good sob story, but he does not take kindly to being manipulated. And the merest mention of mind control is likely to set off a rare but nasty display of temper – he’s vowed never to let himself be anyone’s pawn again. He’s very protective of friends and loved ones, being willing to kill or die to keep them safe. Perhaps he’s not the best when it comes to conflict, but when sufficiently pushed, he’ll grab whatever’s closest at hand and prepare for battle. On the happier side of the equation, Victor’s not averse to the occasional adventure with his friends – while he does enjoy quieter pursuits, there’s a small part of him that longs to see the world and do amazing things. And while he normally hates crowds, when he’s really excited or happy, he can handle being the center of attention in one. Not often, though – he’s at his best when he’s with a small group he really trusts.
Victor is a very creative person, and his favorite activities are drawing (generally with ink and quill, though he also paints from time to time) and playing the piano. While he doesn’t mind sharing his art, his music tends to be a little more private – he only plays to or with close friends (unless you insult his favored instrument, in which case he might make a small exception). He also enjoys lepidoptery (the study of butterflies), catching various specimens and making detailed and annotated sketches. Ask him about what he knows, and he might talk your ear off.
While Victor tries to be open, accepting, and an all-around nice guy, he’s been through some nasty experiences, and those have left some scars on his psyche. Despite his best efforts, he still feels slightly paranoid whenever he’s around older, bearded men with glasses, particularly if they have the title “doctor.” He can be pretty snappish under stress (although he’s liable to instantly apologize for undeserved comments), and can default to assuming the worst in certain situations. Being an abuse victim, he has his share of nightmares and bad days – on those days, he’s liable to flee to somewhere without a lot of people so he can curl up and have a good cry in private. He’s also more skittish and doesn’t particularly like being touched during those times (unless you’re a good friend.) He also has a list of triggers and phobias:

He’s also more skittish and doesn’t particularly like being touched during those times (unless you’re a good friend.) He also has a list of triggers and phobias:
- the abuse of women and children (particularly sexual abuse)
- murder, especially that committed solely for material gain
- being grabbed from behind or touched on or around his butt
- being told he’s insane or a liar should he tell someone about the Emily story (varies – he’s gotten used to the general “you’re nuts” and will probably just give whoever says that a look. Imply he has necrophilia, though. . .)
- total darkness/blindness (liable to reduce him to a lump of jelly – it’s basically his biggest fear)
- finger injuries (his second-biggest fear, nearly tied with the darkness one)
- the number thirteen (he tries to hide it, but he’s developed a mild anxiety about it after being called by that number for the worst week of his life)
- being called a “cocksucker” (He. Will. Go. Nuclear. Bumby called him that.)
Questions/Comments/Concerns:
- If you'd like to know more about him, I have this post which summarizes all the stories that will make up his life, and this old application to
ryansgulch which expands on a lot of his history and suchlike.
- Also would like to point out you've technically already seen him in action: I'm the other player in Insano's sample thread.
- May he please bring his sketchbook along?
